What to expect from the NVQ

To complete the Level 2 NVQ in Structural Concreting, you need to achieve a minimum of six units – five mandatory and one optional. Mandatory units cover core civil engineering skills like handling materials, operating powered units, and following productive working practices. Optional units let you tailor the qualification to your actual site role – for example, exposing buried utility services, removing temporary excavation supports, or compacting concrete using pedestrian plant (like forward tipping dumpers or ride‑on rollers). Your assessor will help you pick the right combination.

This NVQ is designed for people already employed in construction or civil engineering. All evidence must come from real site work – it cannot be done in a simulated environment. Your day‑to‑day job should involve tasks like placing concrete, using powered tools, or shaping construction materials. Because the qualification is built around real‑world competence, you need to be working on site to enrol.

This isn't a box‑ticking exercise. We need to see that you can carry out concreting tasks safely and consistently – from mixing and placing concrete to compacting it around sub‑structures. You’ll work with a dedicated qualified assessor to gather evidence: witness testimonies, site documents, photos, and videos of your work. Professional discussions and reflective accounts may also be used. Everything is aligned with current health and safety standards and productive working practices.

Once you’ve completed your NVQ Level 2 in Structural Concreting, you’ll be eligible for the Blue CSCS card (with the CITB test). This opens up more job opportunities – many candidates move into specialist concreting roles or start on the path to supervisory positions. The skills you’ve proven – storing resources, distributing concrete, managing temporary works – are recognised UK‑wide. You can also progress to higher level qualifications.
